At a well-known government college, a teacher noticed one day that a girl in the class was quietly crying. Concerned, he walked over and asked her gently,
“Why are you crying, my daughter?”
The girl wiped her tears and replied softly, “Sir, I haven’t eaten in two days. I have no money, and hunger has broken me.”
The teacher’s heart sank. He immediately signaled to one of the girls near the door to lock it. Then he turned to the class and said firmly, “No one will leave until we solve this today.”
The Teacher’s Test
He asked the girl to step forward. Then he placed her bag on the desk in front of the class. “Who among you,” he asked, “is willing to give her a hundred rupees for food?”
The class remained silent. Minutes passed, but no one moved.
The teacher then asked again, more directly. Finally, two girls hesitantly came forward, dropped a hundred rupees each into the bag, and returned to their seats.
The teacher repeated his request, this time with more insistence. Slowly, a few more students contributed. Some gave coins, some notes. Yet the bag was still not full enough to cover her needs.
The Turning Point
Frustrated, the teacher took the bag himself and said, “If no one else will help, then I will.” He placed two brand-new books inside and added them to the bag.
He explained, “You see, sometimes when we refuse to help, people must give up even what they have. Today, I give these books to teach you that compassion must come before pride.”
The bag went back to the crying girl. Tears filled her eyes. She clutched it tightly to her chest, overwhelmed.
But the teacher wasn’t done. He called her to his office later, gave her some food, and asked her to explain honestly why she was struggling.
The Hidden Truth
The girl finally opened up. With her head bowed, she confessed that her father had passed away. She was the eldest of four siblings. Her mother was ill, and the entire burden of the house had fallen on her. She had no one else to rely on.
Every day she came to college hungry, struggling to focus. Many nights she went to bed without eating, but she had never shared her pain with anyone.
The teacher’s heart broke. He quietly sent her home with food that day. Later, he visited her neighborhood and discovered she truly lived in dire poverty.

One afternoon, while visiting a small roadside food stall, the teacher saw something that caught his eye. The girl was sitting there with her siblings. The shopkeeper served them naan and kebabs. The children ate with joy, smiling for the first time in days.

The teacher shared her story with the class—not to embarrass her, but to open their eyes. He told them, “Never look down on anyone’s struggles. If you have wealth, share it. If you have respect, protect it. Remember, dignity matters more than riches.”
